Three things to know: Republican National Convention kicks off Monday

Donald Trump Campaign Chairman Paul Manafort told CBS’ John Dickerson Sunday on “Face the Nation” that those following this week’s Republican National Convention will have a chance to see “more of the man” that is Trump “up-close and personal”.

True to form, Trump himself provided the first surprise of the week, announcing Monday morning he was headed Cleveland later in the day to watch his wife Melania take the spotlight for the first night of speeches.

“Certainly the Bush family, we would have liked to have had them”.

More on Trump: Trump is nearly guaranteed to win the party nomination despite continued opposition from some Republicans.

The GOP nominee-to-be adds that Melania Trump’s evening speech will be about “love of the country” as an immigrant.

Partisan unity has been on the upswing among Republicans. The ultimate goal for the group, referred to as “unbinding” or “conscience” supporters, is to allow delegates to vote for whomever they choose, with the hope of preventing Trump from getting to the 1,237 number to clinch the nomination on the first ballot and opening the door for someone else – who is yet to be identified – to get the nomination. “A lot of information was given to people”, Trump said. “I don’t think it takes away from what nearly everyone feels here, everyone is focused on the big picture which is to keep Hillary Clinton from winning the White House”, Ms. Buckland said.

“When we leave here, by and large, it’s going to be a united Republican Party”, he said.

Despite that gap, on the eve of the nominating conventions, both parties remain fairly divided over their nominees. He’ll take on Democrat Hillary Clinton in November.

Jim Miller from Hayward is the 7th Congressional District Republican Party Chair and a delegate to the convention from Wisconsin. Retired Army Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn, who Trump considered to be his vice presidential running mate, will deliver an address as well. “The rules of the Republican Party both permit and require the binding of delegates”. Not surprisingly considering Monday’s theme, a key prime-time slot will go to former New York City Mayor and onetime White House contender Rudy Giuliani, who led the city through 9/11. The only other Republican in the poll to hold a net-positive rating isn’t scheduled to make an appearance on the stage in Cleveland: Ohio Gov. John Kasich.

However, the speakers highlight the wedge Trump’s candidacy has driven through the GOP. Yet his off-the-cuff rhetoric and disorganized campaign have turned off many Republican leaders. Vice presidential pick Mike Pence is slated to speak Wednesday.

Two presidents and two former GOP presidential nominees are among those who will not attend the GOP convention in Cleveland.

Kasich, who has publicly expressed his distaste for Trump, stands at 45 percent favorability among Republicans. Results for the sample of registered voters have a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.
