Three workers have been taken to hospital after a crane collapsed and they were left suspended 60 metres off the ground in North Sydney.
Other workers lowered a metal box using a second crane to assist the other men, who were then released and lowered to the ground.
‘They were supposed to be dismantling it this morning but targets not how you dismantle a crane, ‘ the witness said. James said.Paramedics treated the men on the scene before they were taken to Royal North Shore hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The twisted wreckage of the crane’s arm was hanging over the side of the Meriton building after it collapsed at about 11.15am on Sunday.
“With the help of Ambulance Special Operation and Police Rescue, Fire and Rescue NSW removed those persons from the crane, using a rescue bucket”.
CFMEU NSW secretary Brian Parker said there was a chance part of Arthur Street would be closed on Monday morning, as it would take hours just to set up before they could start working on the crane. All three were in stable conditions on Sunday evening.
“The unfortunate thing here is we don’t know exactly what has gone wrong”, Mr Parker said.
According to the police the crane belongs to the Titan group.
Engineers will attend and assess the site and SafeWork NSW will investigate the incident.
“I’ve witnessed scaffolding falling before”.
As inquiries continue, police are urging any witnesses or anyone with information to come forward and contact St George Police via Crime Stoppers.
“When I heard the helicopters I got a bit anxious, then we went and looked”.
The crane’s jib bent, collapsed and hit the side of the building.
