CDPH said it has now found mosquitoes capable of carrying the virus in 12 California counties, but there is no evidence that these mosquitoes are transmitting the Zika virus at this time.
According to the Centers for Disease Control, more than 1,825 cases of Zika virus have been reported in the United States, including 18 in Kentucky.
Recently in Miami, Florida it was discovered that mosquitos within the state had transmitted the Zika virus.
“At this point in time in Canada it has been primarily travel related cases but we do know sexual transmission can occur as well if there has been someone who has travelled”, Morrison.
Zika is most commonly spread by tropical Aedes aegypti or Aedes albopictus mosquitoes.
53 Brits have been diagnosed with the Zika virus so far this year. Twenty-one of those infections have been in pregnant women, including the two who gave birth to the babies with microcephaly.
Health officials nationwide are urging people considering travel to an area affected with Zika to take extra precautions against mosquitoes.
Last month health officials confirmed another case in Gray County.
The Pentagon says it’s working closely with federal, state and local authorities to monitor the threat of Zika to military and civilian personnel and their families.
This is because women who are pregnant or can get pregnant are at the highest risk of suffering from Zika, since the virus can cause serious birth defects. Typically, symptoms are mild and include fever, rash, joint soreness and/or redness of eyes.

Bentley approved spending up to $250,000 on statewide efforts to combat the Zika virus after the Alabama Department of Public Health requested the funding. The public health department didn’t disclose which country the woman is from.
