‘Thrones,’ ‘OJ,’ ‘Veep’ lead Emmy nominations in key categories
HBO’s Game of Thrones led the pack with 23 total nominations, while The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story came in second at 22. Their respective competition is likely to include last year’s winners, Jeffrey Tambor for “Transparent” and Julia Louis-Dreyfus for the political satire “Veep”.

Emmy nominations for some of the most-anticipated categories of the year included the hit HBO series, Game of Thrones, for “Outstanding Drama Series”. It wasn’t nominated for top reality series, but host Ryan Seacrest got an Emmy nod for best host.
HBO’s “Game of Thrones”, which won the best drama Emmy Award a year ago, received the most nominations, but a couple of developments involving FX show the network’s current strength. With its 56 nominations, FX surpassed its previous record of 45 nominations set back in 2014 and comes in as the second-most nominated network this Emmy Season.
Viola Davis, who last year became the first black victor of the Emmy for Outstanding Actress in a Drama Series, for How to Get Away with Murder, was again nominated this year, in a group of nominees that is orders of magnitude more diverse than those at the Oscars.
Veep, the USA version of The Thick Of It, earned 17 nominations including best comedy series, best lead actress in a comedy series for its star Julia-Louis Dreyfuss and outstanding direction in a comedy series for British comedian Chris Addison.
Netflix took the third spot at 54, well up from last year’s 34, thanks to strong performances from drama House of Cards, docu-series Making a Murderer, and comedies Master of None and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.
Anthony Anderson is nominated for an Emmy Award for his starring role in the comedy Black-ish.
HBO’s fantasy epic about noble families vying for control of the Iron Throne will compete for the prestigious outstanding drama series trophy for the fifth year in a row, the Television Academy announced. The 2016 Emmy Awards will air September 18 on ABC. But overall, by shedding its habit of repeating nominations year after year by rote, the Television Academy assembled a list that reflects much of the best TV has to offer – while more fairly representing America at large.
“Game of Thrones” received nominations in the best supporting drama actor and categories. With its 20th Season premiering in the fall, five-time Emmy®-winner “South Park” received its 15th nomination for Outstanding Animated Program, with co-creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone each earning their first nominations for Outstanding Character Voice-Over. Lastly, she was also nominated for her leading role in HBO’s comedy series, Getting On, in which she plays Dr. Jenna James alongside Niecy Nash, who also received a nomination for her role in the show.
Perhaps my favorite nomination of all was for Louie Anderson, who landed a supporting actor nomination for playing Zach Galifianakis’ mother (yes, his mother), in FX’s quirky comedy Baskets. And that’s all good, because, ultimately, the show had one of its best seasons so far.
Nominations for the 68th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards will be announced Thursday morning.
Rhys will battle Kyle Chandler (“Bloodline”), Bob Odenkirk (“Better Call Saul”), Rami Malek (“Mr. Robot”), Liev Schreiber (“Ray Donovan”) and Kevin Spacey (“House Of Cards“), while Russell will be up against Claire Danes (“Homeland”), Viola Davis (“How To Get Away With Murder”), Tatiana Maslany (“Orphan Black”), Robin Wright (“House Of Cards“) and Taraji P Henson (“Empire”).
“The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story”, which recounted the football legend’s sensational, racially charged trial for the slayings of his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend, Ron Goldman, is a best limited series nominee and earned a number of acting awards for its cast’s portrayal of well-known figures.
The show was also nominated for Outstanding Drama Series, and earned a Writing nomination for showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss for the penultimate episode of Season 6, “Battle of the Bastards”, which also earned a Directing nomination for Miguel Sapochnik.

Other than an Emmy for Margo Martindale for guest performance past year, “The Americans” has been snubbed by Emmy despite four seasons as one of TV’s best and most ambitious dramas.
