Throngs usher in 2016 at bash in New York’s Times Square

Despite a year of global unrest and terror threats leading up to New Year’s Eve, roughly a million people are expected to pack Times Square to watch the ball drop.

“I always wanted to come here, but never took the chance”, said James Gomez, 39, of New Haven, Connecticut, as he surveyed the area with friends looking for a prime viewing spot.

Gomez came to Times Square even though he said he was concerned about the area being targeted in an attack. “I’m scared”, he said.

In the hours before midnight, revelers like Gomez and his friends can listen to musicians such as Carrie Underwood and Jessie J performing on multiple stages set up in the area. The Times Square Alliance and Countdown Entertainment actually do a trial run of the confetti a couple of days before New Year’s Eve. She will be joined by Maggie Rulli, Andrea Boehlke and Jeremy Hassell, who return for their third New Year’s Eve webcast.
