There will be no U.S. Open for Tiger Woods.

On Tuesday evening, Woods made it official that he wouldn’t play in next week’s U.S. Open at Oakmont with an announcement on his website. In his statement, he has said that while he is making progress with his recovery, he does not see it fits yet to be active in competition.
The National is an event hosted by Woods, which proceeds go to the Tiger Woods Foundation. That tournament benefits the Tiger Woods Foundation and was one that figured to make sense for his long-awaited comeback.
The 40-year-old Woods hasn’t won a major title since bringing home the U.S. Open crown in 2008.
However, a simple statement on tigerwoods.com put paid to that, Woods officially announcing he would not only skip the year’s second major but also his own PGA Tour event, the Quicken Loans National, the following week.
Meanwhile, his absence fueled speculation about when he might return, even though Woods repeatedly has said he does not know.
The Quicken Loans National will be held at Congressional Country Club in Bethesda, Md. beginning June 23. Woods, who first had back surgery a week before the 2014 Masters, had two more surgeries in September and October. A year earlier, he finished tied for second behind Angel Cabrera in the U.S. Open at Oakmont.
Prone to returning from injury too quickly in the past, Woods has been adamant this time that he wouldn’t tee up again until his body could withstand the rigours of top line tournament golf. Jack Nicklaus (eight), Arnold Palmer (five) and Tom Watson (four) lead the way in that category.

The PGA Championship is two weeks after Troon, followed by the Travelers Championship, the John Deere Classic and the Wyndham Champion.
