Tiger Woods says he returning to form – despite another flop

Tiger Woods plumbed new depths when he missed the cut in a third successive major for the first time in his career at the storm-delayed PGA Championship on Saturday. Woods will always draw an enormous gallery, even if it’s far more likely that he’ll miss the cut than it is that he’ll win the tournament (and that’s clearly the case now).

He admitted Saturday that his ultimate legacy will be shaped by the sum of his major victories, and nothing else.

“I’ve been in the lead on a tour event, but a major’s a different story”, Jones later told reporters. I feel like it’s going to be an exciting finish. But he still was two shots behind Day, determined not to let his great year end without winning his first.

England’s Justin Rose completed a five-under par round of 67 to move into third place ahead of a group on seven-under-par which includes Sweden’s David Lingmerth.

High on the list of the demise of Tiger Woods is his performance in the sport’s four biggest events, a collapse that continued here early Saturday morning when he failed to survive the 36-hole cut at the PGA Championship.

Whether Woods plays the Wyndham Championship is a decision he will make in the coming days.

He said: “It’s frustrating to miss cuts because any time you miss a cut, you don’t have a chance to win”.

The 27-year-old Day came into the PGA Championship in excellent form, but look for Spieth to slip past him down the stretch and claim his third major of the year.

“I hit it great today but I absolutely made nothing”, Woods said of his round that included just two birdies. And not to be overlooked was Martin Kaymer, the victor at Whistling Straits five years ago.

“I just never felt like I had the speed right“, Woods said later in the same interview. We have to remember that Woods isn’t washed up just yet, but he’s not doing himself any favors when it comes to be relevant in a game that is being taken over by the next generation of golfer. “I have a lot of golf to be played around the world”. Then Woods killed a popular story line by committing to play in the Wyndham Championship next week.

No matter how ragged his game, Tiger Woods, like any headliner worth his marquee billing, can still command a crowd of everyday fans. The Australian will tee off in the final pairing at the PGA along with Jordan Spieth, and in his post-round interview Day commented on his mindset heading into the final round and his anticipation to tee it up with Jordan. I hadn’t played that much the last couple years and I’m finally able to start playing.

Lee came back from his disastrous front nine in the second round and started his day with three consecutive birdies, then added another on the fifth. “And as I said, on a global level”.

“I’m not looking it as a negative”, Day said about his close calls. A birdie at the par-5 second hole settled him, though, and as he said after the round, “I think anything under par this afternoon was a decent score”. The Deutsche Bank Championship at TPC Boston is the second of four playoff tournaments, with Woods having a direct link to it: His foundation has been the primary charitable recipient, and runs the day-to-day operation of the event; to be in the DBC field, Woods would need to get inside the top 100.
