Tigers fall short in 3-2 loss to Red Sox

The start of the game was delayed 80 minutes by storms that moved into the area during the afternoon, and another heavy downpour interrupted the game for about 71 minutes after the fifth inning.

“Once again, he’s the difference in this one, offensively”, Red Sox manager John Farrell said.

Ryan Schimpf, who tied the score with a two-run homer in the eighth inning, hit a three-run walk-off homer with one out in the 10th to give the San Diego Padres a 7-4 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks. Matt Barnes got two outs in the eighth, but Kimbrel was brought in for a four-out save when Miguel Cabrera came up with two on and two out and got him to line out to left.

“When we knew we were going to need to get Miggy, Victor and J.D. Martinez, the four-out save seemed like the right decision”, Farrell said.

Kimbrel retired those three, but still nearly blew the save.

Upton will bat 6th for the Tigers on Saturday evening. “It’s a big yard out there”. Ortiz, who also recorded a single in the seventh to tally his 35th multihit game, now has 22 home runs in Comerica Park, the most of any opposing player in Major League Baseball.

“We can’t worry about that – we have another game tomorrow”, Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said before looking at the clock.

Fulmer settled down after the rocky first, and the Tigers were only down 4-2 after five innings.

Porcello allowed four hits and two walks while striking out eight. I think he was still throwing 95 miles per hour. “We attacked with his fastball and had success, but unfortunately the rain cut his outing short”.

Jhonny Peralta led off the 11th inning with a double and then scored when Grichuk launched a Frank Herrmann pitch over the head of Phillies center fielder Odubel Herrera.

David Ortiz and Dustin Pedroia were reinserted into the starting lineup after a night off and both had multi-hit performances.

“We gave him four runs in the first inning, and then he just did what he has done for us all year”, said Hanley Ramirez, who drove in four runs.

And yet the Red Sox tagged him for ten hits and a career-high six runs in 5.2 innings, yanking the otherworldly rookie back down to earth.

It was Ortiz’ 1,500th RBI as a member of the Red Sox.

The Tigers put their first two runners on in the bottom of the fifth, but McCann hit into a double play and Andrew Romine grounded out. They’ve seen the right-hander go deep into games, as he did in his previous start, when he threw a complete-game shutout for the first time in his career, a 7-0 blanking of the Texas Rangers on Sunday.

Trailing 2-1, Cleveland tied it when Ramirez hit an 0-2 pitch from Toronto closer Roberto Osuna (2-2) over the right field wall. “That set him up to get able to get through the ninth”. Foxx hit 222 of his 534 home runs with the Red Sox from 1936-42.
