Tigers’ McCann, Iglesias involved in dugout dustup

They have been for the better part of three months, over which they’ve been unable to cut into the Royals lead in the American League Central or climb back into the thick of the postseason race.

Usually the anger is directed at opponents, but Detroit Tigers teammates James McCann and Jose Iglesias went at each other in the dugout Friday night at Comerica Park. McCann had gestured toward the field just before the altercation, so it’s possible he was displeased with Iglesias’s – who is known as an excellent defensive shortstop – effort.

Bob Wojnowski of the Detroit News speculated that the spat began when Iglesias didn’t dive for a ball hit by the Red Sox’s Rusney Castillo in the top of the sixth inning. The TV cameras later caught Gose and Iglesias sitting next to each other.

Then, when third baseman Nick Castellanos tried to calm Iglesias, things got even more heated.

The Tigers are two games under.500.
