Tigers trade Cespedes to Mets

At last year’s trade deadline, the A’s dealt him to Boston for Jon Lester and the A’s haven’t been the same since.

The Mets trail first-place Washington by three games in the NL East, but New York rank last in the major leagues in runs and batting average, and is 29th in on-base percentage and slugging.

Binghamton Mets pitcher Michael Fulmer was part of a trade deadline deal on Friday, which brought Detroit Tigers outfield slugger Yoenis Cespedes to the Mets. Cespedes is 8-for-17 with three homers, six RBIs and five runs scored in his last four contests, but is just 3-for-14 with four strikeouts in his career versus Friday starter Wei-Yin Chen. No qualified Met has better numbers in any of those categories this year.

Cespedes will be a free agent after the season as his initial four-year, $36-million contract will expire. He says he does not know much about the Mets, being that they are in the national league and he has played for all American league teams.

The 5-foot-10, 210-pound Cespedes is no stranger to Citi Field, having won the 2013 Home Run Derby the night before the park hosted the All-Star Game which Mets ace Matt Harvey started for the National League. “So give him credit”. He was willing to go against his usual plan and take on a player who rarely walks.

Former Philadelphia Phillies starting pitcher Cole Hamels leaves the stage following questions from the media after being traded to the Texas Rangers prior to the first inning of a baseball game against the Atlanta Braves, Friday, July 31, 2015, in Philadelphia.

Thursday’s trade marked the third Alderson made in the past seven days, having previously traded for Tyler Clippard, Kelly Johnson and Juan Uribe.

He said the Tigers will seek to win with the team as it is now constructed.

The Mets are Cespedes’ fourth team since joining the Majors with the Oakland A’s in 2012. Or they can keep Conforto here and shift Curtis Garnderson to center field. Fulmer is 6-2 with a 1.88 ERA in 15 starts for Double-A Binghamton this season, MLB.com notes. The Mets did not begin talking to the Tigers in earnest until after Wednesday’s agreement for Carlos Gomez – then of the Brewers, now of the Astros – fell apart due to medical concerns. Cessa recently was called up to triple-A posting a 3.98 this season. It was the fourth time in six games Detroit has yielded at least eight runs.

“We’re excited and I love the fact that we were in a position to do some things and be this close”, Toronto general manager Alex Anthopoulos said. But what, or rather who, does Detroit get out of this trade? “But we didn’t make the trade with that in mind”.

With the departure of David Price the Tigers are left without an ace for the rest of the year
