Tigers trade Cespedes to Mets for pitchers

Detroit compensated for the loss of the slugger by hitting three home runs off Wei-Yin Chen, including the 28th of the season by J.D.

Eagerly chasing offense as the clock ticked down on Friday’s trade deadline, the Mets landed the big right-handed bat they desperately needed by acquiring Cespedes from Detroit for two minor league pitchers.

Manny Machado hit his 23rd home run for the Orioles, who have won seven of eight. Kevin Gausman was dealing, and the Orioles scored two runs in the bottom of the first.

“The Detroit Tigers” pitching left plenty to be desired in the wake of trading away starter David Price and closer Joakim Soria.

Just last week, the Mets started a lineup with four guys who had batting averages below.180-including cleanup hitter John Mayberry Jr. But the acquisition of Cespedes – after the Mets also added infielders Juan Uribe and Kelly Johnson – could pay dividends in the race for a postseason spot.

Fortunately for them, the Detroit Tigers had to move Cespedes, a free-agent-to-be whose contract didn’t permit the Tigers to receive draft-pick compensation. Wright got in the game but lasted only one inning before leaving with a left calf cramp that manager Buck Showalter said might actually be a strain. The Mets were able to get Cespedes without having to get rid of injured starting pitcher Zack Wheeler.

“We’ll deal with next season later”, Alderson said. The Mets are excited about Cespedes joining their team. Instead, the Cubs can let Price get trade to another team now, therefore, he loses the draft pick compensation that will be attached to him this off-season.

It was the sixth win in seven games for the Orioles, who earlier in the day bolstered their roster for a playoff run by obtaining outfielder Gerardo Parra from Milwaukee before the non-waiver deadline.

Alderson said the Mets will address that logjam when Cuddyer is ready to return.

Washington manager Matt Williams made the game-changing decision to intentionally walk new Met Yoenis Cespedes in front of Duda in the eighth. It is possible Cespedes or right fielder Curtis Granderson could move to center.

The 22-year-old Fulmer has spent most of this season with Double-A Binghamton, going 6-2 with a 1.88 ERA. As a member of the B-Mets he went 7-4 with a 2.56 ERA striking out 61 in 13 starts. “You have to kind of assess where you are”. “I’ve seen clubs that have traded people that have all of a sudden you look and say, “Hey, I thought they traded the guys, ‘ and then all of a sudden they’re right there”.

Detroit is in fourth place in the AL Central. “That’s not to say that we wouldn’t want them to be here next year, but that’s something we’ll deal with in the course of the offseason”. This deal definitely makes the Mets better this year, but does it in years to come?
