After unfurling the national flag at the Bakshi Stadium here on Independence Day, Sayeed – who took power in March – also spoke of peace and development in the country’s only Muslim-majority state. The Bakshi Stadium in uptown Srinagar has virtually been sealed by a large contingent of police and CRPF personnel, while special check points have been set up at various places within the city and its outskirts, especially the entry points leading to the capital.

Amid heightened security, heavy restrictions were imposed in Srinagar city on Friday ahead of Independence Day.

For security reasons, the government suspended all the mobile networks in the Valley for five hours and the services were only restored after the main function ended.

Separatists called for a shutdown in the valley.

A ceremony was held at Mirpur University of Science and Technology.
