Tillerson won’t disclose Trump’s Iran decision

Under the 2015 deal, Iran agreed to suspend its nuclear weapons programme in exchange for the lifting of sanctions.

Iran’s president addressed the U.N. Wednesday, insisting his country is living up to its side of the agreement. Rather than immediately ending the agreement, that would kick the decision to Congress, which would then have 60 days to decide whether to reimpose the sanctions that were lifted as part of the 2015 agreement. “The United Nations Secretary General and France will play the role of mediator for Iran so that we have a parallel negotiation, but that will enable us to include Iran in the process”.

The deal sets limits for Iran’s nuclear activities and allows regular checks on all installations within Iranian territory. “This is out of the discussion of the JCPOA- out of the discussion of this format for months”, she said.

“We never threaten anyone”.

Earlier, Moon praised Trump’s bellicose speech to the United Nations about the threat, saying the US had “responded in a very good way”.

And, in particular, he objects to the “sunset clause” that would see Iran resume some enrichment from 2025.

It comes as Trump simultaneously is trying to convince North Korea to give up its nuclear arms through negotiations or face annihilation.

Federica Mogherini, the European Union’s top foreign affairs official, emphasized the deal’s importance following a high-level meeting of countries involved in the agreement this week.

In an interview with “Face the Nation” last Sunday, Tillerson acknowledged that Iran is in “technical compliance” with the deal that was negotiated between the US, the Iranians, and five other global powers.

In a clear swipe at Mr Trump, Mr Rouhani said he hoped diplomacy would not be undermined by ‘rogue newcomers to the world of politics’.

“The world will have lost a great opportunity”, he declared.

Mogherini specifically addressed that the US would be handling Iran policy on its own outside of the JCPOA.

Tillerson said he had been surprised when Trump publicly announced he had reached a decision.

In contrast with Obama’s policy of detente with Iran after decades of mutual hostility, Trump called Iran “a corrupt dictatorship” on Tuesday and accused it of supporting terrorism and destabilizing the Middle East.
