Tim Kaine announced as Hillary Clinton’s pick for vice president

“Can’t wait to hit the trail tomorrow in Miami!”

Hillary Clinton introduced running mate Tim Kaine as “a progressive who likes to get things done”, joining the Virginia senator in the crucial battleground state of Florida to help kick off next week’s Democratic National Convention. He rose through the ranks from city council member, to mayor, to lieutenant governor, to governor, to U.S. Senator – and he has never forgotten his Virginia roots or abandoned his progressive values.

Instead, they describe a deep thinker with a light touch – a person who reads dense books on philosophy for fun but also jams on harmonica with any band that will let him play along. Americans need a partnership that will help our nation prosper by building upon the successes of the past 8 years and building an economy that works for everyone, not just those at the top. “There’s no path to the White House without Virginia and Hillary Clinton and Tim Kaine will be an inspirational and unstoppable force in November”. He is not the most exciting or aggressive choice that Mrs Clinton could have made. Earlier this month, Kaine said he is a “strong supporter” of Roe v. Wade. He learned Spanish during a mission trip to Honduras while in law school.

The person familiar with the search process likened Vilsack to the “heart” candidate, given his friendship with Clinton, but said that Kaine’s experience as a victor in a pivotal swing state along with his Senate experience in foreign affairs helped put him over the top.

“He always finds reasons for hope and optimism in every situation, and he is centered by his faith and his family”.

In light of a shooting rampage in Munich, the Clinton campaign is discussing how to balance their plan to pull the conversation away from the GOP convention – and Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump’s acceptance speech – to her vice presidential pick, according to a source familiar with deliberations. He’s shown he can win close elections in a swing state, including a bruising and expensive Senate contest. He supports restricting the sale of magazines carrying more than 10 bullets; Clinton wants to ban military-style guns she calls “weapons of war”. “This is a proud day for every Virginian”. As mayor of Richmond Mr Kaine sent his children to tough, mostly-black city schools-an act which was itself an example of history rhyming: he married the daughter of the moderate Republican governor of Virginia from 1969 to 1973, A. Linwood Holton, who ended his state’s ferocious resistance to civil rights and desegregated schools. He now has the wonderful opportunity to serve as the next Vice President of the United States.

Virginia, in addition to the swing State status, is also one of those States that was relatively unscathed by the 2006 economic recession. Kaine asked the Justice Department to transfer a German diplomat’s son from Virginia to a German prison days before he left office as governor.

Virginia Republicans also released statements weighing in on the pick. Whatever is so impressing Kaine’s colleagues isn’t a public-facing skill.

“Though we disagree politically, I have had the pleasure of working with and developing a friendship with Sen”.

Clinton will call a number of the finalists who weren’t selected for the vice presidential job before the pick is officially announced, according to multiple aides.

But rather than stay focused on Clinton or reach out to the general election voters he now must court, the newly minted Republican nominee spent considerable time stoking the fire of his bitter quarrel with Republican former rival Ted Cruz. And some journalists have complained that Kaine isn’t an exciting enough choice-a recent headline at The New Republic read, “Tim Kaine Is Too Boring To Be Clinton’s Running Mate”.

Except, Kaine isn’t really. “I’m excited for us to get to know one another”.
