Kaine is a senator and former governor from Virginia, a crucial swing state, with a reputation as a pragmatic consensus builder.
The secretary of state spoke about Kaine’s background working as a pro bono civil rights lawyer.
Clinton unveiled her choice of Kaine late on Friday, grabbing the political spotlight from Trump, who accepted the Republican presidential nomination on Thursday night after a chaotic four-day convention. The Democratic National Convention, where Clinton and Kaine will be nominated, begins Monday in Philadelphia.

Another benefit with Kaine is that he speaks Spanish. It had been speculated that Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren or Housing and Urban Development Secretary Julián Castro were among the top picks who could have potentially energised the Clinton campaign.
Sanders supporters have also renewed their anger with the party, in particular with Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D., Fla.), after leaked DNC emails revealed mocking of the Sanders campaign.
On Twitter, Mr Trump sought to drive a wedge between the Clinton campaign and voters who supported Mr Sanders in the Democratic primary.
The 58-year-old Kaine from Virginia had been the focus of increasing speculation in recent days, as Clinton insiders said that former president Bill Clinton, the presumptive nominee’s husband, was backing Kaine. He gave it a try last week during somewhat of an audition with Clinton in Virginia, assailing Trump as selfish and divisive and testing out a few new searing lines.
