Flip Saunders, coach and basketball operations president for the NBA’s Minnesota Timberwolves, said Tuesday that he has been diagnised with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma and is undergoing chemotherapy treatment to fight the cancer. He told reporters that he is attacking this with the same passion as every other obstacle he has faced in his life. In 2014, he was named the head coach again.
He didn’t attend the Las Vegas Summer League, but has remained engaged and at the team’s new practice facility throughout the summer. During the same year (1995), he was named head coach of the team. But the organization expects Saunders to be heavily involved, especially with training camps coming soon.
Saunders says he’s taking the method “daily” and does not envision an interruption in his duties with the group. He led the Timberwolves to eight consecutive playoff appearances from 1997-2004, helping them reach the Western Conference finals with National Basketball Association Most Valuable Player Kevin Garnett in 2004.
On draft night, Saunders and general manager Milt Newton also traded second-round picks to get back into the first round and select former Apple Valley and Duke point guard Tyus Jones at No. 24.
