Two people have been killed in a gun battle with police after Wednesday’s mass shooting at a centre for disabled people in California.

She did not know the condition of the struck suspect but said the officer’s injuries were not considered to be life-threatening.

The man and woman killed were named by San Bernardino police as Syed Rizwan Farook and Tashfeen Malik.

He said the two dead suspects were dressed in assault-style clothing, armed with assault rifles and hand-guns and “came prepared”. She said the shooters were silent as they shot at people in the large conference room where the event was held.

Police initially thought there could be three shooters, but by Wednesday night San Bernardino Police Chief Jarrod Burguan said he believed the dead couple were the only shooters.

Khan stood alongside leaders of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, who condemned the violence.

Farhan Khan, Farook’s brother-in-law, told media he is “in shock that something like this can happen”.

Loma Linda University Medical Center is expecting an unknown number of patients from the shooting, spokeswoman Briana Pastorino said.

At the same news conference, an Federal Bureau of Investigation spokesperson said terrorism was a possibility but it was still unclear.

The incident marks the most deadly mass shooting in america since 26 people were killed in 2012 in a school in Newton, Connecticut.

Chief Burguan said the police still had not determined a motive for the shooting.

This office, like 20 others across the state, is now working with local police to determine if they need added security this week. “Based upon what we have seen and based upon how they were equipped, there had to be some degree of planning that went into this”, he said.
