Tinder launches STD testing feature following AIDs Health Foundation billboard dispute

“Tinder is proud to empower millions of users to create relationships”, Jessica Carbino, chief sociologist for Tinder, said. The World Health Organization (WHO) revealed that more than half the world has herpes and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) provided data which showed that gonorrhea, chlamydia, and syphilis are on the rise in the United States.

Tinder has finally made a bold policy on sexual health protection.

“There was a meeting and email conversation, and it was really about what would be effective and what would help their patrons from Tinder’s side”, said Whitney Angeran, the Aids Healthcare Foundation’s senior director of public health.

Although Tinder is not a health care provider, it is interested in providing users with valuable resources on sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), since the diseases are often associated with casual sex and the hookup culture Tinder app promotes so heavily.

Tinder did not immediately respond to a request for comment on whether it plans to expand the page or make it more visible.

Having agreed to include the STD testing locator in their app-an agreement reached on Thursday-the company has effectively brought an end to their feud with the AIDS Health Foundation, TIME reports. The locator uses a user’s city or zip code to find nearby facilities for STI testing – it even has filters for Spanish speakers, members of the LGBT community, women, and people without insurance.

Tinder was offended by the billboards and sent a letter demanding AHF president Michael Weinstein, remove the billboards because it was “falsely associating Tinder with the contraction of venereal diseases”. The CDC also noted, the majority of these infections are affecting young people – the demographic that is on their mobile phones all day long.

Tinder’s website now includes a link to Healthvana’s free HIV and STD testing site locator, which falls in line with the AHF’s recommendations. Now the information only applies to US STD clinics but let’s hope the section is improved to cover locations worldwide soon.
