Tioga County honors service members, past and present

Vietnam veterans wearing black motorcycle jackets with POW/MIA patches or dress military uniforms embraced one another and shared memories with their comrades in arms.

As part of the citywide celebration, Mayor Martin J. Walsh announced a $200,000 donation to create the Homeless Veterans Housing Fund.

The state with the highest number of captured Americans also was NY, with 9,935 prisoners of war.

We salute you, veterans, on this Veterans Day.

Veterans we talked to say they want to get the word out about what it means to serve, often times in risky situations, regardless of whether they are from the guard, the reserve, or active duty.

Earl Carinio, a Santa Maria resident who has made a career of military service, said the event did a great job honoring veterans.

To help support local veterans, you can donate to Honor Flight Kern County to help a local vet travel to Washington, D.C.to see the monuments built in their honor. Then, in 1954, Congress struck out the word “Armistice” and inserted the word “Veterans” to honor American veterans of all wars.

Lt. Cmdr. Dirk Sonnenberg, who is assigned to the U.S.S. New York, said he and his crew members received an extra show of gratitude because they represent the city overseas.

Bell said there are two reasons America is successful.

Thousands of people gathered along Fifth Avenue to celebrate the service of men and women in the military during the city’s annual Veterans Day parade Wednesday.

The Tarrant County Veterans Council’s theme this year was Honoring Vietnam Veterans, commemorating the 50th anniversary of the start of the USA ground war. However, we especially give thanks to the living veterans who served their country honorably during war or peacetime.

The program’s guest speaker, retired Army 1st Lt. Wayne Bell, served 45 years ago as artillery support in the Vietnam War.

Many of these veterans of past wars remain selfless to this day, making sure we continue to watch out for our veterans.

“We can’t do that to our men and women”.
