Tips from the BBB: Be smart when donating to Orlando victims

The city created the new OneOrlando Fund, which will support not only the victims of the mass shooting on June 12 and their families, but also the LGBT community, the Hispanic community and other affected communities, Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer announced on June 14.

“More than 90,000 people from all over the world have raised upwards of $4.2 million dollars towards Equality Florida’s Pulse Victim Fund thus far, sending the message that they are standing with Orlando, and are here for the survivors and the families of those taken from us”.

Equality Florida, the largest LGBT rights group in the state, posted the GoFundMe fundraiser shortly after a gunman killed 49 people and injured dozens more at a gay club in the deadliest mass shooting in USA history Sunday morning.

“The campaign is the largest and fastest growing in GoFundMe’s history”, spokesman for GoFundMe Bobby Whithorne said to The Washington Post, “Our thoughts are with the victims and all those affected by this awful attack”.

“We are beyond moved by the support from all corners of the world and all walks of life”, Equality Florida wrote.

The fundraising website GoFundMe was founded in 2012 to allow people to set up fundraising campaigns quickly and easily, and to provide an easy way to donate online. Numerous funds are earmarked for funeral expenses. Crowdfunding platforms received millions of dollars in donations for the victims of that attack and One Fund Boston, an organization established to raise funds for them and their families, collected almost $70 million.

The Pulse Victim Fund received $1 million faster than any GoFundMe campaign in the company’s history, Dan Pfeiffer, GoFundMe’s spokesman said through Twitter.

Eskamani said there’s been an “overwhelming” outpouring of support.

Know that anyone can set up a GoFundMe account. She said there had been a shooting.

The Orlando Magic also donated $100,000 to OneOrlando.

Although the organization has not elaborated on how the money will be distributed, or to whom, the campaign and Equality Florida are legitimate. That page has raised more than $150,000.
