Titans announce hiring of Mike Mularkey as head coach

Some reports have indicated that Titans interim head coach – and former Bills head coach – Mike Mularkey is the favorite to land the job, the team is still going through the process with interviewing Marrone.

“I will give all that I have to make this team successful and our city and fans proud”, Mularkey said.

Mularkey is likely to make significant changes to the coaching staff he inherited when Ken Whisenhunt was sacked on November 3, 2015. Both wins with Mularkey this year were by a combined nine points, and one required overtime.

The Titans have a very young roster, headlined by quarterback Marcus Mariota who showed glimpses of brilliance throughout the season before suffering a knee injury. Mularkey also was head coach for two seasons with Buffalo and one in Jacksonville.

While Marrone appears to have had a much more productive meeting this time around, the Titans shouldn’t forget that he left Buffalo on bad terms, particularly with his players. There were seven openings and three teams – the Giants, Buccaneers and Titans – stuck with in-house candidates. He joined the Dolphins after serving as head coach for the Buffalo Bills for two seasons (2004-05).

The team also interviewed Doug Marrone, Teryl Austin and their defensive coordinator Ray Horton for the position after hiring Jon Robinson as their new General Manager earlier in the week. It’s clear that the front office knows it needs to bring in more talent.

However, it appears Manning will generally be among familiar company heading into 2016 and beyond.

Tennessee Titans interim head coach Mike Mularkey is reportedly expected to be named the next head coach, but he is expected to get a short-term contract extension.

Marrone began his National Football League coaching career in 2002 as the offensive line coach for the New York Jets.
