Titans Rule Mariota Out vs. Falcons, Mettenberger to Start

The Titans are hoping to find a fresh life from Zach Mettenberger who will be the starter for this game against the Falcons. “I understand we’re a different football team than we were past year”. That’s kind of the guy that he’s been since day one, and I think he’s improved because of that.

Quinn said he thought the fullback play would be “a good shot” to score. A struggling Tennessee Titans team without its first round starting quarterback.

“Zach hadn’t played in a game in a while – regular-season game – but he made a few good throws early and we didn’t catch the football”, coach Ken Whisenhunt said. Nothing is really going to change for me this week.

Will the Falcons get back in the win column or will the Titans earn their second win of the season?

It might not have been that way, though, had Justin Hunter not dropped a deep pass that hit him right in the hands when he was open in the first quarter.

The Titans’ defense was constantly called on to make pivotal stops in the second half and it delivered.

Mettenberger wasted no time lobbing a 19-yard touchdown pass to Kendall Wright, who stretched over the goal line for the 7-0 Tennessee advantage with 8:42 to play in the first half. The Titans held the NFL’s third-best scoring offense to a season-low in points, forced Atlanta to turn it over twice on fourth down and intercepted two passes – and still came up short.

Whisenhunt tried to play off the imbalance, chalking it up to third-down passes and plays in the two-minute offense.

TURNOVERS: The Falcons had three turnovers each of the previous two games and cut that down to two against Tennessee. Outside linebacker David Bass and inside linebacker Avery Williamson each recorded interceptions, the latter of which came on fourth-and-goal from the one-yard line.

“The Titans are 3-18 since Whisenhunt took over”, said Franco, who is 17-12-1 in the Westgate SuperContest. His second quarter pick was not exclusively his fault, but he simply didn’t loft the ball enough to get over the defender and paid the price.

Atlanta took control in the third quarter, outgaining the Titans 134-35. The Titans were in great shape to possibly go up 14-3, but an interception under pressure kept the Titans from getting any points.

“We’d love to be ideal every single time we’re out there, but no one is”, Mettenberger said.

The reality is that it is unlikely Bryant will be anywhere near ready to play Sunday, giving him more time to spend with the pet monkey he has adopted, which he named Dallas Bryant.

This week the Tennessee Titans (1-5) play their first road game since September 20, traveling to face the division rival Houston Texans (2-5).

“Yeah, I understand. I do understand”, he said, drained and answering the same questions about the same results from a podium not long after Sunday’s 10-7 loss to Atlanta. They can’t commit to the run, even in a close game during which they have a back in Antonio Andrews faring well. Obviously when we got the ball on the one yard line we’ve got to get it in. “We did a good job for the most part attempting to, but we couldn’t finish there at the end”.
