Title pressure got to Tottenham, says Graeme Souness

Kane insists Tottenham, who travel to Chelsea next Monday, won’t throw in the towel, but they need help to remain in the title race and the England striker pleaded with United to give them hope.

Tottenham handed Leicester the chance to win the Premier League for the first time this weekend after the north London club was held 1-1 by West Bromwich Albion on Monday.

“We’re very disappointed, it’s normal”, he told Sky Sports.

However, West Brom fought back with Dawson scoring at the other end to hand West Brom a share of the spoils and leave Leicester needing a victory at Manchester United on Super Sunday to clinch a first league title.

“We needed to kill the game, we hit the post in three situations and it can happen that you can concede”.

Having gone unbeaten in their last six league games, scored seven in their last two without reply, and thumped Stoke 4-0 away last Monday, it was no surprise Mauricio Pochettino named an unchanged squad to face a Baggies side floating in mid-table anonymity.

“We have Chelsea next”.

“But it’s football. We have to dust ourselves off”, Kane added. “You know sometimes the opponent tries to find him and to provoke him as they know he has a strong character and might react”.

The hosts dominated the first-half at White Hart Lane before taking the lead through a Craig Dawson own-goal. But the defender made amends with a second-half header to earn the much-improved Baggies a point.

The visitors showed more of an attacking threat in the early stages of the second period, although it was Spurs who went closest to a second goal just before the hour.

Despite Spurs’ second-half demise, Souness also praised West Brom’s performance at the Lane, claiming only in the Premier League would you see a team with nothing to play for take points off a title challenger.

Without kicking the ball, Leicester were handed an advantage that may see them lift the crown on Sunday at Old Trafford if they beat the Luis Van Gaal boys.

The Football Association is expected to look into the off-the-ball flashpoint from the first half in which Dele Alli, the Tottenham midfielder, appeared to punch Claudio Yacob in the midriff.

“It’s about identity. We are an English club and, for me, it’s important to provide a good balance between the players and to keep the culture”.

“We felt comfortable on the pitch and created chances, but we lost control of the game and allowed them to create chances”.
