TN bandh over Cauvery: DMK leaders detained, industries shut

For supporting shutdown in Tamil Nadu, opposition leaders MK Stalin and Kanimozhi of DMK were court arrested this morning.

“We have deployed enough security at all the 16 entry points on state and national highways from where people and vehicles pass through to and from Tamil Nadu”, start Inspector General of Police (central) Seemanth Kumar Singh told reporters at Attibele in the city’s southern part. Education institutions and Government offices were also open.

In the light of provocative messages on social media being blamed for instigating some of the recent violence over the Cauvery river water sharing issue in Karnataka, police in Bengaluru have warned of stringent action against people spreading provocative messages, pictures and video clips on social media. “Tamil people were attacked by a group of Kannadigas and trucks, omni buses bearing Tamil Nadu registration were torched by protesters”.

The senior DMK leaders, who launched their protest rallies in Egmore station and on Anna Salai, are now courting arrest.

Citing television reports, it said the civil and police authorities in both Karnataka and Tamil Nadu remained mere onlookers and took no advance steps to stop the hooligans.

Karnataka unit of BJP on Friday said Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s intervention in the raging Cauvery row with Tamil Nadu was not possible at this juncture and termed the demand by the Congress government in the state as “petty politicking”.

A source said Tamil Nadu and Karnataka have submitted data to the committee about withdrawal of water, its utilisation, variation in rainfall and its impact on the actual run-off over a period of 29 years in their respective Cauvery basin areas.

DMK leader M.K. Stalin tried to hold protest in Egmore Railway Station and was taken into custody by the police.

Approximately Rs 25,000 crore worth of properties have been damaged in violence in the two States and the apex court had specifically directed in 2009 that if there is violence in these two States, these have to be reported to the apex court, the counsel said.

On Cauvery water for Karaikal, in the tail end of the river system, Parida said with Supreme Court ordering release of 12,000 cusecs by Karnataka, Puducherry should get 270 cusecs of water.
