TN, Kerala and Puducherry record high voter turnout in assembly elections

In Kerala, a total of 1,203 candidates, including 109 women, are contesting for the 140 assembly seats.

Voting has begun in elections in two key southern Indian states, where PM Narendra Modi’s BJP is trying to a get a foothold.

While other parties are expected to grab (+/-) seats in the state as per the exit poll.

Reiterating that there are no law and order issues anywhere in Tamil Nadu, he said there were only “some minor incidents not worth mentioning”.

Over 63.3 percent polling percentage was recorded in the state at the end of eight hours.

It was assured that all voters who turned up before 6 pm at the booths would be allowed to cast their votes.

He said that in 2011 assembly polls, the figures were 78.12 per cent and 73.85 per cent in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections.

To a question, he said there were some glitches in Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) in 17 constituencies, which has been addressed.

Voters in some assembly constituencies in Tamil Nadu were in for a surprise on Monday as they were able to see the actual recording of their vote in another machine. It also emerged that attempts of smaller parties to float a third front or go it alone to challenge the duopoly of the two big Dravidian parties have gone in vain with projections showing that these parties would fare poorly.

In Tamil Nadu, 233 seats would go to polls, with voting for Aravakurichi constituency having been deferred.
