Today Begins National Crime Victims’ Rights Week

What do you think is the most unknown about what victims go through after a crime is committed? “As we begin National Crime Victims’ Rights Week, let us remember the lost, celebrate survivors’ strength, and redouble our efforts to keep communities safe”.

National Crime Victims’ Rights Week, which is observed this week, “reminds communities that, by coming together to support and assist victims, we help to build trust, restore hope and break the cycle of violence”, according to the release. During a special candle light ceremony the group recognized nine crime victims who lost their lives in the a year ago.

Almost every person in the audience had been impacted by crime, and at one point they may have not known where to turn.

Organizers say the theme, “Serving Victims”.

“It sort of empowers victims and I think it also brings an appreciation for the police officers, the assistant DA’s and the advocates who work with victims”, Sibert said.

The City of Jackson held an event, inculding the planting ofr a tree, to commemorate Nation Crime Victims’ Rights Week, Tuesday, April 12, 2016 at Shirlene Mercer Trail Park.

“We love you Rosemary”, said Pennington to her sister. “Please, please, please I just need to find my son and put him to rest for the sake of his lovely wife and his two children – I just need answers, I’ve waited 15 years for answers”.

Vance and The Downstate Coalition for Crime Victims today hosted the 31 Annual Crime Victims Candlelight Vigil.

A number of crime prevention and awareness events are scheduled throughout the week.
