Police say Divine Vaniah Chambliss was discovered when a female family member returned to an apartment in Hoover around 3 p.m. on Tuesday.

“This investigation is still in its very early stages and detectives are not completely ruling out other possibilities”, the press release said. “We don’t have any indications of an intruder or any indication that the gunshot was self-inflicted”. Physical evidence also shows the victim did not shoot himself.
A man was apparently shot dead by his two-year-old son in what US police are calling a horrible accident.
Police will issue further statements when the final autopsy report is obtained, possibly in the next few days.
“‘Horrible tragedy’ is as close as I can come to putting words to it”, Hoover Police Captain Gregg Rector told The Washington Post. Police do know that there was a semi-automatic pistol inside of the suburban Birmingham apartment.
Investigators are working to determine if and how the child would have been able to use the gun.

The toddler lived with his mother in the unit with another sibling who was fathered by Chambliss, who often stayed at the unit to care for his son while the child’s mother was at work.
