Tom Holland visits children’s hospital in Spider-Man costume

Zendaya might be taking on the role of Spider-Man’s red-haired lady love Mary Jane Watson in the upcoming Spider-Man: Homecoming.

While Gwen Stacy was Peter Parker’s first serious girlfriend in the comics, Mary Jane has traditionally been his longstanding love interest. That included a poster of Spider Man hanging upside down and also that Zendaya’s character will be named Michelle. According to their sources, “At least one recent draft of the script has Zendaya’s character dropping several clues to her identity as Mary Jane”.

Spider-Man is at the center of a blockbuster deal between Marvel and Sony. Zendaya, with her personality and talent, was born to play this role. Sony has declined to comment and representatives from Marvel have not responded so far.

Tom Holland takes on the Peter Parker/Spider-Man played previously by Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield, in the film to be directed by Jon Watts of Cop Car fame.

Obviously, that role would be a huge factor in the film, since MJ was the apple of Peter Parker’s eye during his high school days, and “Homecoming” is set during Spidey’s formative teen years.

Spider-Man: Homecoming will be released on July 7, 2017.

He and Zendaya will be joined by Marisa Tomei as Parker’s Aunt May and comedian/rapper Donald Glover in an unidentified role.

Spider-Man: Homecoming is still a year away, but new details about the Marvel film have slowly been emerging – none more revelatory than news of who Zendaya will be playing. Mick LaSalle of the San Francisco Chronicle wrote that Mary Jane is “a comic book character who’s no cartoon, but a sharp and talented young woman”.
