Tom Oates: Packers’ defense holds up its end against Giants

In the ’90s, Brett Favre and Troy Aikman jockeyed for position as the leaders of two of the top teams of that era.

The Dallas Cowboys, Green Bay Packers and New York Giants entered the weekend tied for the most playoff berths in National Football League history (32), with the Packers hosting the Giants on Sunday and winning.

The Green Bay Packers enter this game on a seven-game winning streak after beating the New York Giants last week. Joe Thomas, one of the Packers’ best linebackers in pass coverage, missed practice after leaving the Lions game with a back injury.

Are Beckham Jr. and his teammates still hearing that’s a reason why they Packers are moving on to face the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday instead of the Giants in the NFC Divisional Playoffs?

The Packers are led by Aaron Rodgers.

The answer turned out to be yes, and even though Prescott did his part, it was the Cowboys running game that really propelled the Cowboys to victory. This game will come down to who doesn’t turn the ball over.

Though the Giants may have momentum on their side, defeating the Packers in a third consecutive playoff game will be no easy feat.

But in order for the plan to work for a full game against an explosive team like the Packers, the Giants’ room for error offensively was slim.

“I think (the boat photo and accompanying backlash) did a great job at creating distractions for us”.

COBB’S BIG NIGHT: The receiver had a big night in returning after missing the last two games of the regular season with an ankle injury.

The Packers are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 playoff games and 6-1 ATS in their last 7 games overall.

Nelson’s status for this week’s game at Dallas isn’t known.

In the right place at the right time was Randall Cobb, who separated at the last second from the pack and cradled the ball in his bread basket before dropping to his knees in the back of the end zone to complete yet one more miracle. This is the damage Beckham caused, Newsday’s Neil Best reported, citing a member of Green Bay’s grounds crew.

– Green Bay’s first explosive play came with just under five minutes to go in the second half. He connected with Jared Cook and Davante Adams for long gains before finding Cobb for the 30-yard touchdown. That is good enough to beat anyone in the NFL.

Problem was, the defense had plenty of obstacles to overcome. They won 37-20 on January 15, 2012 in the divisional round, defeating a heavily favored Packers team that finished 15-1 in the regular season.

Nelson’s absence may have slid down the list of important moments in the wild-card game, but he and Nelson have chemistry, a bond that is personal as well as athletic.
