Tom watson insists labour must ‘put the band back together’

“Members who have been contacted by the Labour Party to confirm they are not deemed eligible to vote can contact the Party to obtain the evidence considered by the NEC”.

In July, Mr Corbyn won a decisive victory when Labour’s ruling body voted by 18 votes to 14 to allow him on the ballot paper in the leadership contest without needing nominations.

Hitting back at the north London debate, Mr Smith said: “I think that is hanging out to dry decent Labour MPs”.

Ms Smeeth said she resented being defined as “the Jewish MP”, adding: “I am an MP who happens to be Jewish”.

“When they manage to secure organisational form, either surreptitiously or. more in the open – in the form of for instance, Momentum – then they actually endanger the standing and appeal of the Labour Party which is why I regard them to be political foes”, said the former Labour leader.

Despite the increased fee, 129,000 people are thought to have applied successfully for a one-off vote in the contest between Mr Corbyn and his challenger Owen Smith – the result of which will be announced on Saturday.

Former deputy Labour leader Margaret Beckett described the situation as alarming. The NEC meets on Saturday and we’ll have further discussions at that point.

“And Jeremy doesn’t seems to be very good at disassociating himself from it”.

Mr Watson was not available for comment.

The Labour leader revealed he has been working on his presentation, which MPs have been highly critical of over the past year.

Momentum national organiser James Schneider told Sky News the group had no intention of deselecting MPs.

“We are not campaigning for any deselection and we’re not campaigning for mandatory selection”.

There, Corbyn outlined why he believes Labour needs to change direction.

Lord Kinnock doubted whether he would see another Labour government in his lifetime.

Several members of the shadow cabinet – including chief whip Rosie Winterton – have also voiced their support for returning to a system whereby MPs elect the shadow cabinet, in the hope that it could rebuild party unity and bring a cross-section of MPs back to the top table.

Earlier, Mr Corbyn also made clear that he will oppose moves to give MPs and unions more power over the choice of future Labour leaders.

Watson today said the existing practice of registered supporters – introduced by Ed Miliband in the last parliament and raised from £3 to £25 this year – had been “very rushed”.

Mr Corbyn is expected to call for a wider review of internal party democracy, which could include giving a stronger voice to members.

But senior Momentum figures insist the group is geared towards helping Labour win elections, reaching out to those who are not engaged in politics and increasing party membership.

He told the Today programme that thousands of people regularly attended his rallies across the country.

“I’ve never seen anti-Semitism in Labour on this scale”.

The victor of the contest will be announced on 24 September at Labour’s annual conference in Liverpool. “I think the love may be further away”.
