The MP claimed both the prime minister Theresa May and Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn shared “unambitious” housing targets which fell well short of what was needed.

Publicly, the pair’s relationship has remained relatively peaceful despite Mr Watson telling Mr Corbyn he should stand down after 172 MPs backed a no confidence motion in the leader.

“I have been loyal to our leader since his election previous year, and have seen how he leads up close”. I’m under no illusions that we’re living through unsafe political times – the like of which I haven’t seen during my three decades in our movement.

“I will make us once more a powerful opposition”.

Unite did not hold a members’ ballot.

He submitted:”We say there are obvious dangers in powers that allow for retrospective exclusion of existing members from the franchise”. I was determined that our members would have their say.

“He said last week he didn’t say it but we all know he did”.

“Owen, our party is a strong party, our party is a big party, our campaigning abilities are enormous if we work together on those campaigns”, said the Labour leader.

But the high court declared that refusing them the vote would be an unlawful breach of the party’s contract with members as set out in its rulebook.

“At the heart of my campaign are commitments to strengthening our trade unions, ending exploitation and delivering greater equality”.

“MPs attempting to overthrow Jeremy Corbyn should remember they represent the very members who put them forward for election”.

‘It is a distinct possibility that ballot papers will be issued on 22 August just days after the right to vote is confirmed to a large element of the membership’.

Jeremy Corbyn has been accused by his rival Owen Smith’s team of travelling more miles in the first three weeks of his leadership campaign than he did during the two-month campaign to keep Britain in the European Union.

He continued: “I can not believe that so many MPs are above the views of the people who pay money to the Labour movement, not just the Labour party”. ‘That’s why the committee supported his nomination again’.

But he insisted that Labour can’t win a general election with Corbyn as leader.

He was seen as Jeremy Corbyn’s most senior advisor, having worked for Ken Livingstone and Boris Johnson.

Mr Tarry also questioned the way in which the vote was undertaken.

Some 58% of members were said to be in favour of Corbyn.

“Owen Smith offers the opportunity to reach out to people who have voted Labour in the past but who no longer do”.
