Tony Dungy: Colin Kaepernick benching ‘won’t end well’ for 49ers

On Monday, Coach Mike Tomsula told reporters, “We’re evaluating everyone”. The 49ers should encase him in bubble wrap, attach blinking red lights like the cyclists wear and surround him with yellow crime-scene tape on the sidelines.

Back to 2004 or 2010 and the bad old days. When they were bad and knew they were bad.

“When I signed up, I signed up to play through wins, losses or whatever”, linebacker NaVorro Bowman said after the 49ers’ 27-6 loss here to the Rams. “There’s no genie that’s coming through the door”. He played for the University of Missouri for three seasons and threw for a total of 6,822 yards with 40 touchdowns and only 11 interceptions. He threw for 162 yards on 20-for-41 passing and rushed for 28 yards.

But the main position everyone was wondering about was quarterback.

Aren’t they trying different things on offense? What in the world are the 49ers doing?

“We’re evaluating everything right now”.

I know that’s bound to happen-whether Kaepernick gets benched at any point or not-because that’s just what happens with QBs, especially 49ers QBs, and especially when there are rampant leaks (presumably from 49ers execs) pointing the blame nearly exclusively on the QB.

That was not exactly a soaring commitment to Kaepernick.

First the obvious observation: Colin Kaepernick not only has been benched, he’s unlikely to play for the 49ers in 2016. The only way the 49ers would owe Kaepernick any money is if he is injured.

During training camp, 49ers quarterbacks coach Steve Logan made the case that while Gabbert is widely considered a first-round bust, he could be rebuilt. Kaepernick earns $125,000 for each game he’s on the roster. Does Blaine Gabbert really give the Niners a better chance of winning?

The 49ers in general like to extend players early – they believe they can get a discount and gain salary cap flexibility in the long run. The next season was a short but sour one for Gabbert as he threw one TD and had seven interceptions through three games before a lacerated right hand and a hamstring injury sent him to the sidelines for the rest of 2013. Of course, a decision such as this is bigger than just one game.

And each wrong piece is weighed down by all the other wrong pieces.

The two protesters dangled over fans in the lower bowl and in front of press-box windows late in the third quarter, then displayed a banner telling the Charlotte-based financial institution to “dump Dominion”. “You’ve got to control what you can control on the football field”.

On Sunday, the 49ers defense was fine. “I’m not going down that road”, Tomsula said. “But that’s not how this business works”.

Tomsula said that after reviewing the game tape, one of the things that disturbed him most was the penalties – the 49ers had 13 for 93 yards.
