Tony nominations go to Kentucky-born Wolfe

After “Hamilton”, the most nominations, 10, went to “Shuffle Along” – which spurred a recollection of “The Full Monty”, which received 10 nominations in 2001, but was shut out on awards night because that was the year of “The Producers”.

Danny Burstein, nominated for playing Tevye in Fiddler on the Roof, is the musical actor with the most to lose-this is his sixth nomination, and he has yet to win.

Hamilton, which has caused a ticket-buying frenzy not seen on Broadway in years, features a multi-racial cast in a hip-hop, R&B-inflected musical that tells the story of United States statesman Alexander Hamilton, who was killed in an 1804 duel with Vice President Aaron Burr.

“Hamilton” breaks records with no less than 16 nominations at this year’s Tony Awards, being named for every available category sometimes a couple of times. The Best Musical short list includes Bright Star, Hamilton, Waitress, School of Rock and Shuffle Along.

The other actress-in-a-play nominees were Lupita Nyong’o (“Eclipsed”), Laurie Metcalf (“Misery”), Sophie Okonedo (“The Crucible”) and Michelle Williams (“Blackbird“). Other nominees are “Blackbird“, Eugene O Neill s “Long Day s Journey Into Night” and “Noises Off”.

Hamilton was nominated in all the big Tony Award categories this year: Best Leading Actor In A Musical (Leslie Odom Jr.), Best Leading Actress In A Musical (Phillipa Soo), Best Original Score (Lin-Manuel Miranda) and the biggie, Best New Musical.

Best Play: “Eclipsed” by Danai Gurira; “The Father” by Florian Zeller; “The Humans” by Stephan Karam; “King Charles III” by Mike Bartlett. “Hamilton” also saw six of its stars also nominated, including “Frozen” star Jonathon Groff. Oscar victor Lupita Nyong’o got a best actress nod for Eclipsed, where she’ll be up against Williams as well as Jessica Lange, who gives a breathtakingly flawless performance in Long Day’s Journey Into Night. Among musical actors, numerous members of Hamilton’s multi-racial cast were joined by Cynthia Erivo and Danielle Brooks from The Color Purple, another widely praised musical revival.

“Hamilton” had already received widespread critical acclaim and amassed dozens of rave reviews.

Alas no. Takei wound up tweeting about “Mad Max”, not the Tonys, and the Twitter account of his late show pledged allegiance to what else…”Hamilton”?
