Tony Pulis not looking to leave West Brom

William Carvalho would have solved the latter problem, but Albion failed in their attempt to sign the Portugal worldwide from Sporting Lisbon on deadline day after aborting an attempt to sign Camacho.

Pulis, 58, missed Saturday’s 1-0 friendly win over Delhi Dynamos at The Hawthorns to watch another match.

The former Gillingham, Bristol City and Stoke City manager walked away from his previous job at Crystal Palace in August 2014.

It fuelled speculation Pulis, in charge since January 2015, could be leaving after a frustrating transfer window under the club’s new Chinese owners.

In his statement, Williams said: “Our head coach Tony Pulis is very selective and particular about the players he recruits so it follows that the new team members will add significantly to his first-team options”.

A £15m deal to bring in Malaga midfielder Ignacio Camacho, 26, was close, but I understand his recent injury record gave Pulis concern.

“That having been said, the one disappointment we suffered was not being able to add a further quality midfield player”.

After that transfer window, avoiding relegation will be a major challenge.

“Al-Thani didn’t want me to leave under any circumstances.I’ve spent six years here and while this whole episode hasn’t gone well with some of the fans, during those six years they have had no reason to doubt me or what I have given to defend this club”.

There will be pressure for new technical director Nick Hammond and new chairman John Williams to demonstrate in the next window that West Brom are serious players in the Premier League.

The 32-year-old is eager to repay that faith by delivering another season which sees West Brom stay in the Premier League.
