During a conference call, coach Garrett said he isn’t ruling Romo out for the opener… but who knows?

Following another solid performance on the field and a first quarter injury to starting QB Tony Romo, speculation grows that Haughton’s Dak Prescott, with just three preseaon games under his belt, is the new starting quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys.

Dak Prescott will be the Week 1 starter, as the Dallas Cowboys are merely searching for a veteran backup in Tony Romo’s absence, David Moore of the Dallas Morning News reports.

He suffered a brutal hit from Seattle Seahawks defensive end Cliff Avril in Thursday night’s preseason game.

Romo tried to get back into Thursday’s game and said afterward that he was OK.

According to ESPN, the injury is a compression fracture of L1 vertebra and will not require surgery, though Romo “could miss six to 10 weeks”. We could soon find out whether Prescott can maintain his stunning level of play in the regular season.

A source told NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport that the best-case scenario for Romo’s return is during the middle of the season. Romo walked off under his own power, though, and it appeared the injury wasn’t severe. The Minnesota Vikings backup is Shaun Hill, who played for offensive coordinator Scott Linehan in Detroit, and was on the Cowboys’ list previous year. But in a weird way, I feel good about the fact that was probably as tough of a hit I’ve taken on the back as I’ve had in the last five years.

“We don’t believe that to be the case at all”, Garrett said.

The team had been hoping for a big turnaround this season with a healthy Romo behind center. The Cowboys drafted Prescott as a bit of a project and wanted him to learn the ropes behind Romo until he was ready to take over full-time. Prescott had a flawless passer rating through the team’s first two preseason contests, going 22-of-27 for 383 yards and four touchdowns through the air. He also added two more touchdowns on the ground.
