Tony Romo reinjured his shoulder and is likely out for the season

His already-shortened season might be done, along with the team’s faint playoff chances.

Quarterback Tony Romo, back for just the second game after missing seven weeks due to a broken collar bone suffered in Week 2 in Philadelphia threw two pick-6 interceptions and added a third for good measure.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones confirmed that Romo’s season is finished after the starting quarterback sustained a hairline fracture in his left collarbone on the last play of the third quarter in a 33-14 loss to the Carolina Panthers on Thursday. He fell hard on his left shoulder after being sacked by linebacker Thomas Davis.

The injury means Matt Cassel, who went 0-4 during Romo’s initial absence, will be entrusted with finishing out this 3-8 season. X-rays were taken Thursday, but they proved inconclusive. Cursed with just two full games with Romo at the helm, Bryant has been either suffocated by elite corners (Richard Sherman and Josh Norman) or on the sidelines for much of the season.

Romo and the Cowboys are just twisting in the wind again. Before being injured on Thursday Romo had thrown three interceptions and just barely over 100 yards.

Luke Kuechly intercepted two straight passes by Romo late in the second quarter, returning the first 32 yards for a touchdown. “When I say that, I mean just the way that I’m used to playing. Your body kind of goes into a little bit of shock”, the quarterback said in an earlier Yahoo Sports report.

He was 11 of 21 with 106 yards and a 27.2 passer rating.

It was the fourth time Romo has thrown multiple pick-6s in a game, and the first since a 34-18 home loss in 2012 against a Chicago defense that was among the league’s best in forcing turnovers.

There is still no news on whether Romo will miss the remaining games of the season or when he is expected to return.

Dallas didn’t win without him.

Garrett said Romo will be back in the lineup if he can play.

A disappointed Dallas Head Coach Jason Garrett said in his postgame press conference that the rest of the season for his team would be about accountability. Although he did sign a seven-year, $119.5 million back in 2013, making him a Cowboy until 2020, it’s clear the veteran’s body will likely not allow him to play that long.

“You have to step in and try to fulfill that role”, Cassel said after leading Dallas’ only touchdown drive against the Panthers.
