Tony Romo suffers broken bone in back, might miss 6-10 weeks

CBS had reported the MRI showed Romo had fractured his vertebrae and would likely be sidelined for six to 10 weeks. In 2013, Romo dealt with herniated discs in his back and had a cyst removed. The first is on September 11 at home against the New York Giants.

Rookie Dak Prescott is now the team’s backup and has had an outstanding preseason. Prescott might be the real thing, but even if the Cowboys saw him as the heir to Romo, he probably wasn’t supposed to be thrown into this kind of situation right at the start. “We heard a wide-range of possibilities, in terms of when he will be able to play”.

The team had been hoping for a big turnaround this season with a healthy Romo behind center. Dallas went 1-11 without him. The 36-year-old QB had two recent back operations as well as multiple shoulder surgeries in recent years.

In 2014, the four-time Pro Bowl player sustained a small fracture in his back and missed a loss to Arizona before leading the Cowboys to the NFC East title and their first playoff win since 2009.

“Again it’s not related to the other back issues that he’s had (and is) very specific to the hit he took the other night at the game”, Garrett said. But that didn’t stop the star receiver from voicing his opinions on Twitter throughout the team’s Thursday night game against Seattle, which the Seahawks won 27-17. That injury will reportedly keep Romo out for the next 6-10 weeks, but Garrett said that no one in the organization is setting a date for Romo’s return at this point in the process. “There was a little bit in me that says I don’t like that”.

“I mean obviously, we were being smart”, he told the Dallas Morning News after the game. Prescott has also rushed for two touchdowns. Kellen Moore has already been lost for the year and the team only has Jameill Showers behind him at quarterback.

“We don’t believe that to be the case at all”, Garrett said. “I would love to go on the board and go head to head with anybody else”.

The Cowboys have instituted a plan the last few seasons that involved giving Romo Wednesdays off during the week in order to maintain his health and limit the number of hits he takes.
