The three-day UN Sustainable Development Summit kicks off Friday with a record number of top world leaders, besides those from CARICOM, expected to attend, as well as heads of multilateral bodies, such as the World Bank and the global Monetary Fund (IMF).

It involved all United Nations member states, the civil society, the private sector, regional actors and organizations, as well as ordinary citizens with an active interest to this noble cause. We have lots of experience of that in the United Nations. The real challenge begins once we leave New York and return to our countries.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has said Bangladesh and other developing countries need global support on finance, technology, capacity building to implement the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

“Together, we can build a better future for people and planet”, said the secretary-general. As the United Nations marks its 70th anniversary, we look forward to working with all people and partners to realize our founding Charter’s vision of a peaceful world where no one is left behind, and where all people live in harmony with the ecosystems that sustain us, and with each other. The Agenda posits itself on the three dimensions of sustainable development: social justice, environmental stewardship and economic wellbeing.

Opinions expressed on the editorial pages are not necessarily those of WSN, and our publication of opinions is not an endorsement of them.

Emerging today from the PSF were announcements of more than 35 corporate commitments to benchmark sustainable development actions, including investment in low-carbon infrastructure, combatting corruption, gender equality in the workplace, access to and strengthening of healthcare services in the Least Developed Countries, and more. Not only the wellbeing of the people is at stake, but the trustworthiness of those who govern our countries and want to show that they truly care. Government needs to ensure that all the flows of funding within the country actually support sustainable development.

Climate change is a global challenge of the highest priority due to its severe and multidimensional effects on humanity and the planet.

The Sustainable Development Goals are ambitious, and they will require enormous efforts across countries, continents, industries and disciplines – but they are achievable.

The framework will be critical to the follow-up and review process within the context of the High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development.

Sheikh Hasina said this in her speech at the UN Summit for the adoption of the Post-2015 Development Agenda at UN Headquarters here on Sunday. “Peaceful societies and the revitalized global partnership are also essential for the achievement of these aspirations”, President Sirleaf noted.

Meanwhile, the buy-in and accountability by countries with the most at stake//DON’T UNDERSTAND WHAT THIS PART MEANS…// for the SDGs is a significant difference from the MDGs.
