“That’s the Hillary I’ve come to admire”.

Hands down, he told Barack, nobody’s talking about who will give the best speech.

His son Beau’s death from cancer in May sapped the energy he would have needed, ending his presidential aspirations.

It was his valedictory from public service, and “kind of a bittersweet moment”, he said.

Leon Panetta, the former CIA director and secretary of defense, said that Clinton is uniquely qualified to be President and lashed out at Trump over his apparent call on Russian intelligence agencies to help find emails that Hillary Clinton deleted from her private server.

Biden then went to emphasise things that Trump was clueless about, saying “Actually, he has no clue, period”. His suggestion – essentially asking for Russia’s espionage help to damage his political rival – played into plans by Democrats to portray him as someone who would be a risky leader, willing to upend decades of USA foreign policy.

“I’m going to be living in Pennsylvania and OH and Michigan” leading up to the election, he said on MSNBC Wednesday – all states where his blue collar appeal would resonate. “Hunger Games” actress Elizabeth Banks and other speakers praised Clinton for focusing her early law career on children’s causes; left unsaid was that she also joined the Rose law firm in Arkansas, which worked for Tyson Foods, Wal-Mart and several brokerage houses and had a part in the Whitewater real-estate scandal that dogged the Clintons for years. “Everybody knows she is tough”.

Vice President Joe Biden is paying tribute to President Barack Obama at the Democratic convention, calling Obama the “embodiment of honor, resolve and character”.

“There’s only one person in this race, who will be there, who’s always been there for you”, he declared.

As WikiLeaks posted hacked emails from the Democratic National Committee containing evidence the party apparatus favoured Clinton over Sanders, “Bernie-or-Bust” supporters have been spoiling for a fight, booing during Clinton endorsements and staging protests. “… Even in the middle of crisis, she listens to people, and keeps her cool, and treats everybody with respect”. “No, I mean that”, he said.

“You are the best organizers on the planet and I am so proud of all the change that you made possible”.

“No matter where you were raised, how can there be pleasure in saying, “You’re fired”?” the VP continued of the former Apprentice star.

“He tries to say he cares about the middle class. Give me a break; that’s a bunch of malarkey”, he said as the crowd cheered. He did, however, get a resounding, arena-wide “no” out of the crowd when he asked whether they believe Donald Trump when he says “There’s nothing suspicious in my tax returns, believe me”. “This is a complicated and uncertain world we live in”. He said Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump “has no clue what makes America great”.

He added: “We can not elect a man who belittles our closest allies while embracing dictators like Vladimir Putin. That’s not who we are”, a refrain Obama uses and that has become a staple for Clinton’s campaign. “This was a four-day Hillary party, and we weren’t welcome”, said Liz Maratea, 31, of New Jersey. Trump is a man “who confuses bluster with strength”.

You are now subscribed to the Daily Digest and Cheat Sheet. “Trump says he wants to run the nation like he’s run his business”.

“It’s never a good bet to bet against America“, he said, noting we’ve had candidates before “who attempted to get elected by scaring people, but they never win because we don’t scare easily”.

Obama urged Americans to summon the hopefulness of that White House campaign, before recession deepened and new terror threats shook voters’ sense of security. It’s hard to imagine a more fitting description of not just Obama’s presidency, but also the image of Hillary Clinton that was offered during the first three nights of the convention. That’s what matters. And that’s why we can take the food and music and holidays and styles of other countries and blend it into something uniquely our own. What if Joe Biden had mounted one last run?

Like Obama, Biden is predicted to have a regular campaign presence leading up to November’s vote.
