Top Gears’ Chris Evans leaves work in his pyjamas and slippers

The trio are now set to launch their new Amazon Prime motoring show, and will go head-to-head with Chris as he reboots Top Gear.

After hosting Top Gear for some time alongside Richard Hammond and Jeremy Clarkson, James May has now said that he thinks new host Chris Evans is “ballsy” for continuing the series without the original team.

Interestingly, the 53 year old presenter didn’t rule out working with the Beeb in the future: “The BBC may have ruled me out, but I don’t rule out the BBC”.

However, the BBC rubbished these claims, telling Digital Spy: “The truth is that Top Gear producers have been blown away by how quickly Chris has taken to talking to camera whilst driving at speed, a skill which has taken some presenters a long time to master”.

“I thought, “Oh, so now they’re celebrating us”, but I also thought it’s harsh on Chris Evans”.

May also said he would work at the BBC again in the future, if the opportunity arose: “The BBC may have ruled me out, but I don’t rule out the BBC”, he said.

“Just as he’s trying to launch his version of the programme, the BBC is saying, ‘Look how brilliant it was before'”.

But referring to producer Lisa Clark leaving, James quipped: “Stories about all the trouble might be an elaborate hoax, before it explodes on our screens in brilliance”.

Replacing Jeremy Clarkson, Evans was recently spotted on the side of the track looking quite uneasy while taking a lap in a new Audi R8 with Sabine Schmitz.

She said in a statement she was “moving on to new projects”, and added: “I’d like to wish production all the very best with the show”. Now we just hope it is not too late to save Top Gear!

It's a ballsy move: James May has shared his thoughts on the BBC's all-new version of Top Gear which stars Chris as the lead presenter in a new interview in Radio Times
