Top North Korean aide dies in vehicle crash
Ri Je-Gang, a top party official, reportedly died in a vehicle crash in 2010 at a time when he was rumoured to be involved in a power struggle with Jang Song-Thaek, the brother-in-law of Kim Jong-il.

Kim Yang-gon, North Korea’s party secretary handling inter-Korean affairs, is reported to have been killed in a vehicle accident on December 29, 2015.
He played a leading role in realising the 2007 summit between the then leader Kim Jong-Il and South Korean president Roh Moo-Hyun.
Park, who helped secure the release of two American journalists detained in North Korea in 2009, said he doubted that there had been any disagreement between Kim Yang Gon and Kim Jong Un. Analysts have said Kim Yang-gon’s death could lead to a deterioration of ties between the two countries.
Despite the troubling news, North Korea has not shown any abnormal signs on the military front, a military official said.
Mr Choe, a vice-marshal who was once considered No. 2 to Mr Kim Jong Un, was purged last month and sent to a farm for “re-education”, according to South Korea’s spy agency.
“The likelihood of North Korea’s fourth nuclear test is not so high in light of the increasing security cooperation between the South, the USA and Japan, and the resulting additional worldwide sanctions”.
It hailed Kim Yang-Gon as a faithful revolutionary of late leaders Kim Il-Sung and Kim Jong-Il and “the dearest and the most trustworthy comrade-in-arms” of current leader Kim Jong-Un. “Most die either because they are machine-gunned, or they die in vehicle crashes”.
His name was listed sixth, after Kim’s and four other senior party officials.
His reappearance alongside Kim Yang Gon’s death follows numerous reshuffles and deaths in the secretive leadership.
Bruce Klingner, a North Korea expert at the Heritage Foundation in Washington, told the Journal that Kim Yang Gon may have been punished for the fruitless talks between the warring neighbors, after they failed to reach an agreement in August.
China, North Korea’s main economic and diplomatic backer, expressed its condolences too, saying Kim had made positive achievements in promoting relations.

“The series of reinstatements of key officials this year suggests Kim Jong Un might be backtracking on his reign of terror”, said Mr Cheong Seong Chang, senior researcher at the Sejong Institute in Seoul. KCNA has not said who will replace him.
