Top seed Halep into third Roland Garros semi-final
Halep, the runner-up in 2014 and 2017, enjoyed a 6-1, 6-4 victory over 2016 champion and third seed Garbine Muguruza of Spain. Of her first 14 points, 13 arrived via errors by Muguruza – nine unforced, four forced.

She improved to 3-0 against her longtime pal and Fed Cup teammate Keys, including their US Open final last September.
Muguruza had lost all three previous times she faced Sharapova, whose five Grand Slam titles include two at Roland Garros.
“I don’t feel I’m favorite for this match, because she’s played better than I have this year”, Muguruza said of her next match against Halep. Muguruza is 3-0 in career grand slam semifinal matches. “One of the things I always say, I feel like women, especially, should bring each other up”.
“After the first set I just stayed strong, I did not give up at all”, said Halep, who is still chasing a maiden grand slam. The Spaniard won the French Open in 2016 and Wimbledon past year.
Del Potro fought back tears during his post-match interview and was loudly cheered by fans at Court Suzanne Lenglen. “So it was very nice to play like that”. During the ensuing changeover, the left-handed Nadal was treated by a trainer, who applied white tape to both of the No. 1-ranked Spaniards wrists. I was close to quit this sport.
There was no doubt entering Thursday’s semifinals that there would be an American woman advancing to the final of the French Open. He went on to win the U.S. Open the same year by defeating Federer in the final. So long ago has it been that he was the semifinal opponent for Roger Federer’s only French Open title, when Federer had to win the fourth and fifth sets to surpass del Potro.
He came back on court in full swing and made Schwartzman run a lot with a combination of deep groundstrokes and subtle drop shots.
Sharapova looked the more rusty of the two players, with two limp service games handing Muguruza an immediate 4-0 lead and consequently the first set.
Less than a year later, she is on the verge of becoming a two-time Grand Slam victor and will peak at a career-high No. 4 in the WTA leaderboard after a splendid run at Roland Garros.
Sharapova never recovered from serving up 3 double faults in the first game.
“The most important thing is that I have taken those opportunities”. She’s more patient now, and knows better how to pick her spots.
While the Romanian sometimes has trouble with so much on the line, Stephens has been flawless in title matches on the WTA tour, going 6-0.
Next up was a match between two Americans who happen to be good friends off the court.
Kerber called for a medical treatment due to foot blister three games into the third set, before she conceded a break, and never appeared to threaten Halep’s position.
After winning the 2017 US Open, Stephens went on to lose eight straight matches.
“In the first set, it was just lightning”.
That he trailed by a set and a break before rain delays allowed him to change tactics and recover to get there?
