Top Storylines Heading Into Hurricanes’ Sun Bowl Battle
The Hurricanes lost their sixth consecutive bowl game on Saturday afternoon, this time falling 20-14 to the Washington State Cougars in the Hyundai Sun Bowl in El Paso, Texas. But WSU’s hallmark explosive offense was dormant throughout the second half of Saturday’s game, turning a potentially dominant win into a squeaker. The Cougars blew a big lead late in a bowl loss to Colorado State in 2013 but held off Miami in the fourth quarter. Two plays later, with the Hurricanes still inside Washington State’s 5-yard line, running back Mark Walton fumbled the ball when it looked like he was headed for the end zone.

Miami began to come back in the fourth quarter with a two-play touchdown drive that began with a wildcat handoff from running back Yearby (who earlier in the game reached 1,000 rushing yards for the season) to Braxton Berrios, who sprinted 60 yards down the right sideline for the Canes’ longest run of the year. He completed 29 of 53 passes for 295 yards and two touchdowns.
Miami, sensing a possible track meet, passed up a short field goal on its opening drive, and instead on fourth down tied the game 7-7 on Kaaya’s 4-yard touchdown pass to Stacy Coley. He’s got more credibility than I have at least, particularly when it comes to Washington State when I occasionally let my subjectivity get in the way of clear thinking.
Unfortunately for Scott, he’ll turn the keys of the program over to Mark Richt after today, but the Miami players should be plenty motivated to send Scott off on a winning note. Miami is 0-5 since then, including a 33-17 loss to Notre Dame in the 2010 Sun Bowl.
Mike Leach was also on the hot seat at the start of the season, but despite a loss to FCS Portland State to start the year, the Cougars went 8-4 with a win over Oregon.
But it wasn’t the snow or even the Washington State high-powered offense that doomed Miami.
“It’s a blessing to be in any bowl game, especially after the season that we had with all the ups and downs”, safety Dallas Crawford said before the Hurricanes left for El Paso.
Falk added to a 10-7 lead with 1:10 remaining in the second quarter with a 25-yard touchdown strike to Gabe Marks.
My hats off to interim head coach Larry Scott for an admirable showing, having his team continue to fight game after game after the firing of Al Golden. The attitude of the team decided that they weren’t going to let the weather or anything like that be a distraction or change our focus or what we came here to do.
As a freshman, Yearby was a good change of pace back and ran for more than 500 yards off the bench. As in, how in the world could I have thought the Cougs were going to beat the Huskies in the Apple Cup with a backup quarterback going against that Washington defense in a road game?
On the other side of the ball, the Cougars ranked 93rd nationally, but I was still mostly encouraged by the defense’s play this year.

The Cougars had just 26 seconds to work with, but Miami – the most-penalized team in the country – committed two more before halftime. The Cougars took a 10-7 lead on a 30-yard field goal by redshirt sophomore Erik Powell on the ensuing drive. Scott overcame adversity and led all Miami receivers in yards with 75-yards. The Hurricanes took over at the Washington State 28 after a punt.
