Tornado that missed Chapman was EF-4

This aerial image made from a video by KWTV-KOTV, shows storm damages Wednesday, May 25, 2016, in Bristow, Okla. Crews are evaluating the damage Wednesday after tornadoes destroyed several homes as a series of severe storms swept across the Plains. He said the tornado, which at one point was a half mile wide, damaged as many as 25 homes, some substantially. The best place to turn for information is the National Weather Service.

A Calgary storm chaser witnessed a large twister spare the majority of homes in its path in Kansas Wednesday night, tweeting some dramatic photos and footage. The airport reported the all-clear signal was given about 4:30 p.m.

Damage was also reported to numerous barns and outbuildings. It was determined that one long-lasting supercell thunderstorm produced eight tornadoes.

Authorities say one person drowned when a vehicle was swept off a road in central Oklahoma.

Duck-and-cover alerts were issued for nearby schools.

And there could be even more come Thursday.

The National Weather Service says a storm near Colorado Springs was pummeling the area with 1-inch diameter hail.

A tornado watch remains in effect until 10 p.m. Most of the damage was done by winds up to 115 miles per hour and hail that pelted buildings and vehicles.

Debris from the shed was found almost a mile to the southeast where the EF-1 tornado lifted.

The extent of the damage south of Chapman wasn’t immediately clear, but the National Weather Service confirmed that railroad tracks near the town were ripped out of the ground.

A rare double tornado touched down in Kansas, CNN reported.

There were no reports of injuries or deaths in the latest round of severe weather.

“The unusually favorable thermodynamic environment, coupled with increasing large-scale forcing and wind fields sufficient for supercells, suggests the risk of strong tornadoes and very large hail”, forecasters said at mid-afternoon. The storm system dropped hail that locals compared to baseballs and created multi-center tornadoes that touched down multiple times.

Later storms will develop further west and move across the region later Thursday night. Some storms could also form in northwestern Oklahoma.

“Flooding will continue to be a problem probably on into tomorrow and possibly Sunday morning as those floodwaters finally start to recede”, Roker said. He told affiliate WIBW-TV that at least 20 homes were destroyed.

More than 120 responders searched through debris and damaged homes overnight looking for injured residents. The school in the city of Brenham is 75 miles northwest of Houston.

“It’s awesome how this tornado missed those centers of population”, said Paul Froelich, a Dickinson County fire district.

No fatalities or serious injuries were reported.
