US National Weather Service meteorologist Jody Aaron said the twister touched down in the south-western part of Birmingham at about 5pm and appeared to have caused “significant damage”.

A tornado has struck Birmingham, Alabama, damaging houses, uprooting trees and injuring at least three people in the state’s largest city, law enforcement and weather officials say. ‘Details are still sketchy, ‘ said Jason Holmes, a National Weather Service meteorologist, said.

Some survivors of deadly storms across the Southeast lost their homes and belongings, but say they’re thankful to see another Christmas. But Perkins – who survived hunkered down inside a closet with her husband – said she was happy just to be alive.

He managed to climb inside and fetch some Christmas gifts that had been under his tree, but his neighbours weren’t so fortunate.

“You kind of stop and realize what Christmas is all about”, Perkins said. Two neighbours had died in the storm.
