Tornado warning issued for Fayette, Lamar, Pickens, Tuscaloosa counties until 6 pm

National Weather Service officials said in a tornado warning that they expect the winds powerful enough to destroy mobile homes and cause significant damage to other buildings.

Two tornadoes tore through Pickens County, including an EF-2 tornado near Aliceville/McMullen, and another near Ethelsville.

The National Weather Service reported a roof blown off a home in the Beaverton area.

A sheriff in eastern MS says a tornado has damaged homes, toppled trees and knocked out power.

The NWS has issued a tornado warning for Lamar and Pickens counties until 7 p.m. A tornado warning for Fayette County continues until 6:30 p.m. Public schools there were to be closed Wednesday as officials surveyed the damage. A tornado watch will also be in effect through 10 p.m. but it appears the most unstable air will remain over West Alabama, especially in locations south of a line from Aliceville to Tuscaloosa.

The Minnesota Department of Transportation is advising no travel in the southwestern part of the state because of blizzard conditions and near zero visibility.

According to Alabama Power’s storm outage map, more than 14,000 customers were without power at the height of the storms late Tuesday and early Wednesday.

Homes in MS were also damaged, and multiple tornadoes were reported there. To the north, several Plains states are dealing with a foot or more of snow.

If you’ve enjoyed the spring-like weather that has occurred over the past few days, the bill comes due on Tuesday.

There’s a reduced chance of strong storms in southern and southeastern Alabama.

Severe weather on the warm side of Winter Storm Kayla is moving into the South and Ohio Valley Tuesday, where it has already spawned reports of tornadoes and brings the threat of more damaging storms.
