Tornado watch issued for parts of New Jersey

The National Weather Service in Mount Holly, N.J., issued a tornado watch for Berks and surrounding counties Wednesday afternoon. Damaging wind gusts and another tornado warnings can’t be ruled out but the widespread severe threat will continue to decrease in the afternoon.

Once a Tornado Warning has been issued by the National Weather Service, it’s important to get to a safe spot immediately.

Rain will pick up in intensity, as the line of showers and thunderstorms rolls through during the evening hours.

The Department of Homeland Security’s Ready.gov website lists steps on how to prepare and deal with a tornado.

The watch extends to Bucks County, the majority of southern New Jersey as well as parts of Maryland and Virginia.

Besides winds, a storm survey team discovered that the tornado had a width of 115 yards.

When a warning is issued, residents should take cover immediately in an interior room that does not have any windows, such as an interior bathroom with a tub. An action plan is necessary in cases of severe weather, including thunderstorms in local areas. He said there had been unconfirmed reports of possible tornado sightings near the Barhamsville area, but he said it wasn’t clear if it was in the James City County or New Kent sections.

Thunderstorms moving northward are expected to affect DE through 4:30 p.m., with localized rainfall resulting in water on roadways, the service said. The severe weather has knocked out power to more than 48,000 Duke Energy customers in North Carolina.

At least three tornadoes have been rated EF2, including a pair of deadly tornadoes that hit Lamar County, Mississippi, and near Convent, Louisiana, on Tuesday.

Sunny skies will be with us for Saturday and Sunday with highs in the lower 50s on Saturday and into the lower 60s for Sunday.
