Tornadoes Kill 14 in US South; East Sees Record Warmth
“It is hard, particularly this time of year, to see such damage and know that heartbreaks go along with that damage, that families have lost loved ones”, Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant said at a news conference Thursday afternoon. The statement describes the victims as a 19-year-old female and two 22-year-old males.

The number of deaths in MS caused by a series of raging storms and tornadoes now stands at eight, while another two people have gone missing, added to which are six fatalities in the state of Tennessee and one more in Arkansas.
Agency spokesman Greg Flynn said before dawn Thursday that injuries are “more than 40 for sure, and some of those are quite serious”.
In Benton County, Glenda Hunt, 69, said she was cooking chicken when she heard the storm. Lahon Curry told NBC affiliate WMC that a tornado destroyed his Marshall County home with his mother and sister inside, but fortunately no one was hurt.
Communities were banding together and already raising money to help those affected by tornadoes and severe weather that ripped across the country this week, causing devastation in the South and Midwest before Christmas.
Wednesday’s storm system triggered more than 20 tornadoes in Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana, Mississippi, Tennessee and MI, authorities said. “We’re in trouble”, he said.
Twisters hit southeast MS exactly a year ago, killing five people and injuring dozens of others.
Despite the severe weather front weakening, Alabama residents reported a tornado striking the city of Birmingham. The newly homeless Mississippian is happy just to be alive-especially after learning two of her neighbors died in the storm. Two of the seven people killed in MS were from the Holly Springs area.
Governor Robert Bentley also declared a state of emergency across Alabama on Friday to deal with the effects of the storm. The rushing water separated the family as they got out of the vehicle, he said.
The National Weather Service warned residents to avoid driving in areas where flooding was expected.
In Birmingham, Alabama, the National Weather Service said the temperature rose to 73 degrees overnight, setting a record high for a low temperature for December 23.
More severe weather was also in store for parts of Georgia and Tennessee that were again being pounded with rain.
Authorities are unsure how the accident occurred, but TEMA said the deaths are weather related. According to AP, 3.7 million people in Mississippi, Arkansas and Tennessee face the biggest threat for tornadoes.
“You kind of stop and realise what Christmas is all about”, Perkins said.
“I just thank God that they are here”.
