Tornadoes rip through Indiana

At least six tornadoes were confirmed throughout the state Wednesday.

The National Weather Service is reporting at least two tornadoes have struck central and north central Indiana.

The weather service says the tornado traveled almost 5 miles on the city’s south side Wednesday, was about 300 yards wide and lasted 10 minutes.

Kokomo High School’s football players are passing up a game at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis to help clean up tornado damage in their hometown.

Cars were smashed, houses were decimated and power lines were down as multiple tornados ripped through surrounding areas in Howard County. Furthermore, the Colts are providing financial support for the American Red Cross and the United Way of Howard County, while the proceeds of the 50/50 raffle from Saturday’s preseason game will be donated to the Red Cross and other relief organizations to help.

The Kokomo tornado was one of several that swept through central and northern IN and northwest OH on Wednesday.

But meteorologist Amos Dodson in the agency’s North Webster, Indiana, office says crews are still surveying damage near Peru to determine if it was caused by a tornado. A tornado warning also briefly stopped KISS from shouting out loud during a show at Toledo, Ohio, though there was no touchdown.

Pence commented on the storm damage at a press conference in the city’s Emergency Operations Center.

But there have not been any injuries there, he said.

GOP vice presidential candidate and Indiana Gov. Mike Pence plans to leave the campaign trail Thursday to assess storm damage. The original update relied on information from the weather service’s tally of an August 15 tornado outbreak, not Wednesday’s storm.

Indiana University Kokomo cancelled all events on campus Wednesday evening due to the severe weather.

At EF3, like the one in Kokomo, winds up to 165 miles per hour can be produced and have the capability of lifting cars off the ground and destroy stories of well-constructed homes. That tornado injured almost three dozen people.
