Tornadoes start popping up in northeast Kansas

Wild weather continued to pummel the middle of the United States Thursday evening, with tornadoes reported in Kansas and Texas and at least 19 people trapped by flooding in a Kentucky cave. The last tornado lifted just south of Garden City a little after 9 p.m.

Severe weather spawning numerous tornadoes roiled large stretches of Kansas for a second day Thursday, prompting residents to anxiously watch the skies but causing only scattered damage in rural areas and no injuries or deaths.

In Kansas’ Dickinson County, a tornado Wednesday was blamed for destroying eight homes and heavily damaging as many as 20 others and farmsteads.

There were preliminary reports of a tornado in Bryan, Texas, Thursday afternoon that damaged multiple homes, according to the Weather Channel.

Officials say the half-mile-wide tornado carved a path about 26 miles long and was on the ground for 90 minutes.

But the weather may not let up for the county, as more storms have been predicted into Saturday.

Troopers checked a rural area in Dickinson County, the place where 20 homes damaged, and they checked each home to make sure everyone was safe, according to Trooper Ben Gardner, a spokesman for the patrol. That was one of 12 twisters that occurred, he said.

The National Weather Service in Louisville issued a flood advisory for parts of Hart County, Kentucky, and said Horse Cave would experience flooding.
